Mildred Pierce

Mildred Pierce is so cool that they try and hide it away from people actually looking to find it. Housed in a warehouse in an industrial district, there is no sign, just an overgrown fence with an old driveway seemingly leading nowhere. I guess that if you are not hip enough to actually know where it is you don’t get to eat there. This would be a shame because the food is fantastic. The doors open up into a cavernous room with huge Italian frescos on the walls. The food is inventive and always fresh. Their club sandwich haunts my dreams, filled with avocado and smoky chicken with pancetta on a dark rye. This sandwich is definitely not your typical greasy spoon fare. The chicken biryani is also a favorite that we frequently order as takeout at the end of a meal. That the food is so good is not surprising given that the second half of the building is dedicated to Cookworks – a locally famous cooking studio that teaches classes to all levels and has even hosts a TV show on the food network. Mildred has lots of parking and is easily accessible from downtown.
