Don’t think too much about 9-11 when you step into the lift of the prestigious Mandarin Oriental. Midtown Manhattan sparkles at your feet when you gaze out over the city by dusk from the 35th floor. The floor-to-ceiling windows give you a nearly 360-degree view of Central Park South, Columbus Circle and the pinnacles of the Rockefeller Centre. An antique Japanese Haori decorates one wall. Behind the bar is a climate-controlled wine cellar made of glass. The wine menu is 22 pages, one of which is dedicated solely to sake. Start your dinner with a $17 cocktail in the hotel bar. Imported Wagyu beef massaged in beer from Japan, Langoustine from New Zealand, and codfish with foie gras-miso sauce are served in square slices. The ceviche is served warm here. The chef has a fetish for froth, the maître d’ for celebs and the sommelier has a thing for sake. The food is not 100% the best of the best, but the many other fine details compensate.
