Café Sabarsky

People don’t go to Neue Galerie to see pictures by Gustav Klimt or Egon Schiele. Actually, everyone comes here to visit Café Sabarsky, named after its founder. It’s situated in a beautiful art nouveau house built at the beginning of the 1900s. You really feel you’re in Vienna: wooden walls with ornaments, marble-topped tables, and seats upholstered in flowered plush by the window. The main speciality of Café Sabarsky is traditional German and Austrian dishes served in style. It’s the spot for a sumptuous breakfast or brunch. The menu includes Wiener Frühstück, Spätzle (a kind of fresh pasta from the South of Germany), Viennese sausages and Hungarian beef goulash. And the Mozarttorte (a confection of chocolate, pistachio and caramel nougat) is an absolute must-eat. Cabaret evenings are held every week in the autumn, or there’s live piano music. Even though it isn’t hip, it’s enormously popular. People from the Upper East Side queue up for a table at weekends. A lovely haven of refuge if you’re feeling nostalgic ... or if you’re just a devotee of quality and good food.
