Noho Star

Seen from the street through the closed-off windows, it seems like a dark, bleak place. Once inside, the interior reveals itself to be a very light, “grand café” style space, with high ceilings and a large open kitchen. The age of most of the (artistic-looking) patrons betrays the fact that this must have been the “place to be” 10 or 15 years back. It is clearly still a much appreciated restaurant, since the designer diners of bygone days are still coming here. A restaurant in NYC that pulls this large a crowd for so long has to be good. Three-quarters of the menu consists of “restyled American soul food”, supplemented by a number of Chinese dishes. The serving sizes are enormous and quite affordable. Try the Pear Salad with Stilton (the roast walnuts in particular are nothing to sneer at), or the Potato Pancakes with Tuna Sashimi, followed by the home-made Meatloaf. Despite the lack of music, there is an amiable atmosphere and the serving staff, like the check, is quite friendly. The slightly outdate entourage is a bit of a pity, but if the weather is fine, you can always enjoy a table in the sidewalk seating area, with a nice view of Lafayette Street.
