Freeman

This rustic little hunting lodge is hidden away at the end of Freeman Alley, a narrow and sinister alley in the Lower East. Here, you can enjoy delicious American food and maybe drink an unusual draught beer or a crazy cocktail, depending on your mood. After prunes wrapped in bacon, Devils on Horseback, and the obligatory artichoke dip with Parmesan mayonnaise, it’s time for serious meat eating. Choose the terrine of wild boar with cherries. The decor is enlivened by an enormous pair of antlers and other stuffed trophies of the chase, antique furniture and oil paintings, and illuminated by flickering candles. Nice for a late weekend brunch. The service (garnished with a beard) is familiar, possibly just a trifle TOO familiar, it’s far too stuffy, and there’s only one toilet. However, it’s exactly these vagaries that make the place immensely popular with tout young hip NYC. It’s probably New York’s most talked-about secret right now. And it’s even reasonably priced, too.
