Jackson Diner
This vast space was in fact once used as a diner. The Indian entrepreneurs that run it now have invested most of their energy in excellent cuisine. The restaurant deserves a prize for the ugliest ceiling in New York. The room is large, high and unwelcoming; the rows of tables marked with large numbers are out of order. The Buddha figures are all wearing a chaste little red top. Don’t let the visual impression scare you away, because the food is amazing. Try the lamb in creamy spinach sauce, or the chicken in a jacket of saffron egg. Drink Indian beer to put out those serious fires: hot and spicy here means REALLY HOT. The restaurant is in the heart of Little India, in Jackson Heights, where the rent is low. High concentration of students.
