Hudson Cafeteria
Advertising hotshots from all over the world come to see this imposing example of the work of Philippe Starck. The hotel has lost the allure of novelty, but it is certainly still a place to be seen. It is easy to miss the entrance. Watch out for a square hole in the wall, where a neon chartreuse escalator carries you upwards. The walls are three stories high, walled floor to ceiling by cupboards. Sit at the long communal tables, or perch on high barstools at a vantage point. The open kitchen is the centre of attention. The staff is friendly but superior, dressed in black – as are many of the patrons. Smooth-shaven ladies’ legs, short dresses, button-down shirts opened low and high heels. The food is reasonable. The point here is more the drinks in the white bar, before the lobby. In summer, you drape yourself over the cushions on the inside terrace with a margarita. In winter, nestle cozily in the library, a high, open room with warm fireside seats, a purple-clad billiards table and copper dome lamp.
