THOR
The Spätzle and the Riesling are telltale signs of the owner's origins. The Austrian sense of cosy hospitality has become an abstract concept, expressed in a small black calla lily in a sophisticated silver vase on black wooden tables, set in a dark room lit by chandeliers. Grab a table in the back of the restaurant with a view of the backs of the houses in the Lower East Side. The roof and ceiling in that seating area are glass. Cocktails are served on a silver platter. The prices seem reasonable, but the servings are small. Go for a hot plate, a cold plate and a side dish. The oysters with tuna tartare and caviar are served on small pillars of crushed ice. Marketing directors and black-clad magazine people indulge their palates in the Austrian caviar and the expensive international wines. This god of thunder is part of a design hotel.
