La Esquina

Taxi drivers come to this Taquiria for a fast taco from the front counter. If you walk through the door marked “Employees Only” and go down the stairs, you enter the kitchen in the deep catacombs of the building. Perspiring Mexicans throng around a huge stove and carry boxes of fish and vegetables on their shoulders. Find your way through the kitchen, and you’ll be in a dark Latino restaurant, illuminated by candlelight and shaded lamps. Drab concrete walls and a dark wooden floor. You can feel the subways rattle past far below. Catchy Latino music sets the mood. The menu features Mexican food in its purest form. Small snacks, big platters. The chevice with whitefish or shrimp is served in a generous ice cream bowl. The cocktails come in small beer tankards. The jalapenos rellenos are stuffed with cheese and chicken; eat them with moros and christianos (rice and black beans). Make sure you leave room for the chocolate cake. You’ll have to wait an extra fifteen minutes for it to come fresh from the oven! Book your table now before this place is discovered.
