You can’t have dinner here, but it is still a must-see for a drink on the sly before or after dinner. Don’t let the big, angry black man scare you off; just walk down the dark alley with a fence and the sign: “Lower East Side Toy Company.” The bar is decorated like a secret Speak-easy from the bad old days of Prohibition, when alcohol and tobacco could only be consumed in secrecy. Big leather armchairs, a Nickel Odeon (one-person cinema for five cents), chandeliers from the 1920s and red velvet wallpaper. Beer bottles are served in brown paper bags, and cocktails come in porcelain teacups. This underground lounge just reopened its doors. You can quiet your growling stomach in one of the many neighbourhood restaurants, or around the corner in Schiller’s Liquor Bar (yes, they also serve FOOD!).
