Fatty Crab

Not to be confused with Krusty Krab, this is young, relaxed Malaysia at the fringes of the Village. In the summer, a line of twenty-somethings waits for a table, a bit alternative, a bit scruffy. The best chance at a spot is before 7 p.m. Worn carpets on a dark floor. Each table has an old tea tin with a dark gnostic by way of a centrepiece. Beer is served in skinnies (0.5l) or fatties (almost 1 liter), promoting a sense of solidarity. It is all part of Fatty Crab. No appetisers and main dishes, just food, which you share with the rest of the table. The dried fish used to salt the food is an acquired taste. Unusual dish: 4 lightly steamed quail eggs, seasoned to taste with the crumbled salt fish, to slurp out. Definitely don’t miss the Malaysian curries, served piping hot in a clay pot. Coconut rice served separately. The rock music cranks up a notch progressively as the evening wears on. Sitting feels the same way: straight-backed Asian-style on high wooden chairs.
