Buddakan
The ultimate in class in a former cookie factory on the corner of the Meatpacking District, right beside Chelsea Market. Distinguished entrance, dark lounge/bar where slick men in chique suits and young women with far too many Gucci jewels and Prada bags wait sardonically for a table. The five different dining rooms create a cacophony of style. Patrons are dwarfed by the communal oak table in the ballroom with ear-splitting high ceilings hung with 3 cathedral-sized chandeliers. Drink away your wait with an exciting cocktail (‘Tranquillity’, ‘Sacred’ and ‘Charm’). Choose a table downstairs, in the high library room. Things are a bit quieter there. Descend the staircase like a Chinese princess. A collage of Buddha statues hangs on the wall. The menu features a reasonable number of Asian fusion dishes such as the ‘Crispy Taro Puff Lollipops’. The ‘Sizzling Short Ribs’ are outstanding primarily because of the unusual bed of vegetables and wild mushrooms and the different types of rice. This is where you go to be seen while enjoying good food. Reservations are recommended!
