You’re in France! Charming waitresses in black lingerie with black suspenders gracefully bend over the table, pepper mill in hand, and confidently place the most scrumptious dishes on the red bar or on one of the small tables in the small, crowded area. Portraits of colourful smoking, Andy Warhol-like gays stare down at you while large murals decorate the room. The rules of the game are clear to the regulars, students, bon vivants and wine lovers: throw a euro in the happy ceramic piggy bank and you’re handed your own wine glass. At the bar, in wine coolers and in a Billy bookcase you can find various wines to taste before ordering a glass of the best. Once you’ve finished your drink, you fill the glass vase with bank notes to show your appreciation. The menu of the day is “klein aber fein” (small but first-rate) and includes dishes such as Cod en Papillotte, fresh Triangoli with Roquefort and a mouth-watering Sabayon Schnittchen at the end of the meal. This “weinerei” is one of the many fun eateries around the famous Kastanienallee.
