Die Turnhalle

You cannot smell it anymore but it is obvious that a lot of sweat used to hang in the air. Today, the former gym hosts a restaurant that still carries the name of the old building: Turnhalle. The guests do not look exactly sporty and it seems the place has not found its own style yet as it lies somewhere between a lounge and a bar, a café and a restaurant with young and old, well dressed and casual folks gathering here for intimate dinners as well as group parties. The concept of the venue that opened in May 06 might seem a bit too upscale for neighbouring Friedrichshain. And nobody can tell - not even the very obliging punk waitress - why they pump up the volume at 10 p.m. and start playing old-fashioned Santana tunes. But if you have a sense for unusual locations and want to pub-crawl the quarter around Simon-Dach-Straße it is an interesting place to kickstart a long night. If you bring a date, go upstairs where the gallery offers privacy while you overlook the whole scene.
