What you’d really like to do would be to drink up the contents of the tranquil-looking ornamental pond next to you, since some of the dishes do justice to the hot ‘n’ spicy name of this restaurant, situated in the unusual Siam-Paragon shopping complex. If you go outside through the doors disguised as dispensing cabinets and sit on the patio, it’s hard to realise you’re right in the middle of BKK’s commercial centre. Choose a delicious cocktail or a fire-extinguishing banana smoothie. Lots of the dishes come from the Isan region in north-east Thailand, which is not only poor but whose inhabitants also rate the chilli pepper more highly than the King. In this region, tradition demands that you eat glutinous rice (Khao Nieuw) with your hands, accompanied by spicy Som Tam (pok pok)/ papaya salad or a Larb Nua (beef salad). The dishes use a lot of fish sauce, lime leaves and mint leaves ... and large quantities of chilli peppers of course! You’re surrounded by the shoppers in Paragon and served by rather scatty young lads who mean well but haven’t really got the hang of it all yet. Not for wimps.
